How can you tell the difference between a Paint horse mare and a pinto mare? Because they both have patched coats, it's easy to confuse them. The only sure way to tell is to consult the studbook: while pintos are only a colour breed, Paint horses are an official breed in their own right. Paint horses have Thoroughbred ancestry, which accounts for their elegant build.
